National Diabetes Awareness Month

November is officially here, and we're celebrating National Diabetes Awareness Month by giving away free advice and education on diabetic foot care. Nearly 80,000 Americans face limb amputation each year; a frightening risk that in many cases can be prevented. Follow these do's and don's of diabetic foot care to help reduce your risk of limb amputation:

Don't:
  • walk barefoot
  • smoke
  • soak your feet in hot water
  • cut corns or calluses yourself
  • wear thong sandals
  • cross your legs. This can cause pressure on the nerves and blood vessels
Do:
  • Have your shoes fitted by a foot care specialist and make sure they feel comfortable at the time of purchase
  • Inspect the insides of your shoes for foreign objects or rough areas that might cause blisters.
  • Wash your feet daily and dry them carefully.
  • Wear socks at all times! Especially if your feet get cold. Try seamless socks that are specifically made for diabetic foot care.
